People who skip that all-important first meal of the day, suffer setbacks in memory, mood and energy levels. They are also more likely to gain weight, in part because of excess eating later in the day. Research on the habits of people taking part in the National Weight Control Registry, a long-running study of successful dieters, for example, shows that about 80% eat breakfast daily.

Additional research suggests another advantage of consistently eating breakfast is a a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes. About 2,000 of the men developed Type 2 diabetes over the course of the study. Those who regularly skipped breakfast had a 21 % higher risk of developing diabetes than those who did not. The heightened risk remained even after the researchers accounted for body mass index and the quality of the subjects’ breakfasts.

Other studies have also found a link between skipping breakfast and greater risk of Type 2 diabetes. While it is not clear why the relationship exists, some scientists suspect that a morning meal helps stabilize blood sugar through the day.

Studies show that consuming a larger proportion of your calories later in the day, especially carbohydrates, has a detrimental affect on blood sugar and insulin levels.

Most running and walking shoes can typically last up to 800 kilometres. But how and where your shoes get used can shorten their useful time. Running on pavement, for instance, can lead to quicker wear and tear of shoes than running on a dirt track or hiking on trail.

Here are a few signs that it’s time to get new sneakers:

Perform the Press Test. This will determine if the midsoles still provide proper cushioning. With your thumb, push on the outsole upward into the midsole. If the midsole shows heavy compression lines with a minimal amount of compression, there is little or no cushioning left. The midsole on new shoes will compress into lines or wrinkles.

Don’t worry about dirt and grime. They’re signs of use. What you should look for are signs of wear and tear, such as heels that have stretched out and outsoles that have worn down. If your shoes have seemingly moulded to your feet, that’s another indication of excessive wear. Pain in your feet, such as hammer toe and bunions, and aches in your knees, hip or back are other signs that your shoes have lost that loving feeling. Get something nice.

These problems can range anywhere from hammer toe to leg tendon damage. However, the most common problem from high heeled, pointed-toe shoes are ingrown toenails. These shoes create chronic pressure on the big toenails and prevent them from growing properly. Some shoe pressure can cause the nail to puncture the skin leading to infection, and other complications that can cause permanent damage, and possible removal of the toenail if untreated.

People with diabetes should be particularly careful when it comes to wearing high heels and be on the lookout for ingrown toenails. Diabetics have poor circulation, which makes healing difficult. They also may be more susceptible to nerve damage from their diabetes, which can prevent them from feeling pain in their feet until it’s too late. If ignored this condition, which is easily treatable, can lead to amputation. Ouch.

Here are a few tips to help manage ingrown toenails and prevent infection:

*Limit the amount of time in heels

*Wear heels on days that require limited walking or standing

*Trim toenails straight across the top

*Soak feet in lukewarm, soapy water or Epsom salts

*Dry feet and toes thoroughly with a clean towel

*Use a mild antiseptic solution on toes

The Camel pose, or ushtra-asana.

The Camel pose is a powerful posture for stretching your spine, back muscles, shoulders and arms. It’s best to practice after most of your muscles are limber and and you have worked your back and shoulders.

Here’s how you do it:

*Sit up on your knees with the heels of your feet pressed against your butt and the calves of your legs flat on the floor.

*Reaching backward, grasp your left ankle with your left hand and right ankle with your right hand.

*Inhale through your nose and lift your butt off your legs arching your back and thrusting your abdomen forward and tilt your head as far back as possible.

*Hold the posture for the duration of your inhale, or breathe gently through your nose while holding the posture.

*Exhale and return to the kneeling position.

Hold the posture for the duration of your inhaled breath. If you choose to breathe while holding the ushtra-asana, hold it for between thirty seconds to one minute. Repeat the posture three times…isn’t that nice?

Researchers at the University of Oxford found that after three years of daily aspirin use, the risk of developing cancer was reduced by almost 25% when compare with a control group not taking aspirin. After five years, the risk of dying of cancer was reduced by 37 percent among those taking aspirin.

But the research also poses difficult questions for doctors and public health officials, as regular doses of aspirin can cause gastrointestinal bleeding and other side effects. Past studies have suggested that the drawbacks of daily use may outweigh the benefits. However, the new studies also found that the risk of bleeding in aspirin users diminished over time.

A second paper that analyzed five large randomized controlled studies in Britain found that over six and a half years on average, daily aspirin use reduced the risk of metastatic cancer by 36 percent and the risk of solid cancers including colon, lung and prostate cancer by 46 percent.

It can sideline you for months and involves a long, hard recovery process. Female athletes need to be especially careful. They’re six times more likely than males to sustain an ACL injury.

The difference between frequency of ACL injuries in females and males comes down to anatomy. Characteristics of the female body, including knee/hip alignment, knee bone structure, ligament composition and hormones, may increase their risk of ACL injuries.

To prevent ACL injuries, you need to develop more hamstring strength. The hamstrings, the large muscle group on the back of the thighs, are often underdeveloped and relatively weak compared to the quads, the large muscle group on the front of the thighs. This along with other risk factors can place excessive stress on the ACL and cause it to tear. However, if your hamstrings are strong, they provide stability across the knees and help relieve your vulnerable ligaments of unwanted stress. To strengthen your hamstrings to support your knees, perform exercises that involve flexing or curling the knee.

Here’s an exercise to help develop this critical muscle group and help prevent ACL injuries while also improving your speed and running technique:

*Lie with your back on ground and your hands out to your side

*Place a towel on low-friction surface and place your feet on the towel

*Bridge your hips toward the ceiling

*Flex knees and hips to slide heels toward glutes until your feet are directly under your knees

*With control, extend knees and hips; slowly return to start position

*Perform with single leg on ground and opposite leg in air at a 45-degree angle to the ground

*Do three sets of 10.

SmartToes Toe Stretchers unique design are extremely beneficial to stretching and strengthening your hamstrings, as well as, aligning your toes and feet.
The researchers from Louisiana State University Agricultural Center found that nut consumption is linked with lower levels of an inflammation marker called C-reactive protein , which is associated with heart disease and other chronic conditions, and higher levels of the “good” kind of cholesterol.

In addition, people who regularly ate the tree nuts had lower body mass indexes than people who didn’t regularly eat nuts.

The research included 13,292 adults whose diets were analyzed. The researchers considered people who ate at least a quarter of an ounce of nuts a day. The researchers found that about 18.6 percent of people between ages 19 and 50 and about 21 percent of people ages 51 and older were regular nut consumers.

The researchers found that the prevalence of conditions like heart disease and diabetes was 5 percent lower than those who didn’t consume the nuts.

Chia Seeds are also a great source for fiber containing essential fatty acids and protein. FitFlax with flax seed and chia seeds is a deliciously healthy source of fiber, Omega 3 and protein.

A recent survey conducted by the American Podiatric Medical Association found that 40 percent of men and women couldn’t remember the last time their feet were measured. And 65 percent of American women between the ages of 18 and 49 haven’t had their feet measured within the last five years, meaning they’re probably walking around in shoes that don’t fit. The survey also reports that 84 percent of people chose comfort over style when buying non-sports shoes.

Shoe size can change with age, from manufacturer to manufacturer and for many women during pregnancy. Ill-fitting shoe wreak havoc on your feet. Nasty Blisters, hideous corns, irritating bunions…Is that really what you want? I should think not. There’s nothing like finding a shoe with the perfect fit. Make it happen.

Here are a few tips from the good people at the APMA:

When you’re getting fitted for a new shoe, wait until later in the day because your feet swell throughout the afternoon.

Stand when your feet are being measured or fitted.

Don’t be surprised if your feet aren’t the same size. It’s OK… just relax. Whatever you do, don’t let them you see you panic. Just buy for the larger foot. Problem solved.

Try on both shoes, and walk around the store, preferably on a hard surface.

Properly fitting shoes should be comfortable immediately.

Try on shoes while you are wearing the same type of socks or stockings you expect to wear with the shoes.

Most Americans don’t get enough fiber each day to meet their nutritional requirements. It’s recommended that women get at least 25 grams of fiber per day on a 2,000 calorie diet. Men are recommended to get 38 grams. However, the average American only gets about 15 grams daily. Humans actually evolved eating more than 100 grams of fiber a day, largely from wild greens. Eating just one apple a day (skin on) will give you an average of 4.4 grams of fiber, about one-fifth of your daily need.

And apples don’t have just any old fiber, they are a rich source of a particularly powerful kind called pectin. It’s what’s used as a gelling agent to make jams and jellies, and in our stomach it can delay stomach emptying through a similar mechanism.

Researchers at UCLA showed that by swapping in pectin for regular fiber, they could double the time it took subjects’ stomachs to empty from about 1 hour to 2 hours, which meant subjects felt full that much longer. Another study published in the journal Nutrition, discovered that people that eat an apple or a pear before meals resulted in significant weight loss. What happened is that the fruit crowded out less healthy choices, and they ended up eating fewer calories overall, and they lost weight.

FitFlax with flax seed and chia seeds is a deliciously healthy source of fiber, Omega 3 and protein. It’s great in protein shakes and on salads and veggies. It helps boost your immune system, and promotes healthy weight loss. Enjoy the benefit of flax seed and the benefit of chia seeds with FitFlax.

The first is the strength and rigidity of the heel and its position. In order to feel balanced, your shoe should meet the ground directly under the center of your heel bone, which carries your weight. Heels that are off center will feel wobbly.

The second is the fit of the toe box, where the ball of your foot touches the sole. That’s a key area because even with perfectly positioned and strong heels, a lot of your weight will still rest on the ball. And a bad fit can result in toe blisters in the short term — not to mention corns, bunions, hammer toes, and other foot problems in the long. You don’t want that.

The third is the fit of the part of the shoe that cradles your heel. It’s what makes the shoe comfortable. Differences of a millimeter can make or break a shoe’s comfort. Everyone’s feet are different, which means some will swear by a given brand and others will hate it. But brands do tend to manufacture to a consistent size, so if you find one pair of shoes that fits you well, go with it.
